Country Overview

Government and legal system: Republic. Mozambique achieved independence from Portugal in 1975.  The country was ruled by the Marxist Front for the Liberation of Mozambique (FRELIMO), and in 1989 the party adopted a new constitution and held multi-party elections.  In 1992 FRELIMO and rebel Mozambique National Resistance (RENAMO) forces signed a peace agreement to end fighting.
