Country Overview

Government and legal system: Republic. The country of Tanzania was formed in 1964 after Tanganyika and Zanzibar merged.

Political trends: In 1995, the country held its first elections since the 1970s.  Two additional elections have been held since 1995. The current president is Jakaya Kikwete.
